Le 22 avril 2004, la Direction Générale "Politique Régionale" de la Commission européenne a remis pour la première fois le "Prix européen de l’innovation régionale" à neuf régions de l’Union :

 Le Limousin (France) : LES CRÉANAUTES - Strengthening regional identity by highlighting existing talent in the region.
 Overijssel (Pays-Bas) : Pilot Wireless Care - Improving the efficiency and effectiveness of outreach medical professionals using a wireless broadband
 La Sarre - Saarland (Allemagne) : The German Centre of Excellence in NanoBioTechnology - a public-private partnership for the construction, extension and promotion of a virtual regional Centre of Excellence
 Sachsen-Anhalt - la Saxe-Anhalt (Allemagne) : VDTC -ProDiMA - Development of innovative products and services using "virtual reality" technologies for mechanical and plant engineering SMEs
 Le Schleswig-Holstein (Allemagne) : IT Quality Seal - Strengthening consumer confidence in new information and communication technologies.
 Steiermark - l’Est de la Styrie (Autriche) : TANNO meets GEMINI - Creating affordable, energy efficient housing using local timber.
